Madeira
Subtropical mountains, levadas and Funchal
Madeira is a volcanic island in the Atlantic, with steep green mountains, a capital (Funchal) on the south coast and a network of levadas, the irrigation channels that double as walking paths. The Laurisilva, a laurel forest, is a World Heritage natural site.
Madeira uses the same time as mainland Portugal. Mountain weather changes fast, so check warnings before a levada walk.
