Algarve
Cliffs, coves, lagoons and the sunniest coast
The Algarve is Portugal’s south coast. The west (Sagres, Lagos) has golden cliffs and Atlantic swell; the east has warm, calmer water and the Ria Formosa lagoon system, with barrier islands reached by boat.
Faro has the region’s airport. Many places are far easier with a car; check the seasonal bus and train timetables before you rely on them.
What to eat and drink
Grilled fish, cataplana, sweet figs and almonds
When to go
